About Us

Hey there – we’re Cast and Catch, a fishing shop built on early mornings, friendship and a shared dream that’s been four years (and countless casts) in the making.

We’re Russell (“Cast”) and Garth (“Catch”) – two longtime fishing buddies who finally stopped talking about opening a tackle shop and actually did it. Our goal? To create a laid-back, well-stocked space where fellow anglers – beginners, pros, and everyone in between – can gear up, swap stories, and feel right at home.

Garth’s Story

From selling long-term insurance to running a fishing store, my journey has been anything but ordinary. I spent years in the insurance world, but deep down, I always knew my heart was somewhere else – on the water, rod in hand.

Ironically, I hated fishing as a kid. My mom used to haul me down to the rocks in Pennington during school holidays, and I dreaded every minute. But everything changed during a family trip to the Berg. My eldest son, James, and I were escaping the chaos of a sick toddler (Travis, our youngest), and with just one rod and a single spinner between us, we caught a few tiny bass – and had the time of our lives. That moment lit a spark.

Fishing quickly became a family tradition: bass missions, tiger fishing at Jozini, and plenty of laughs. Somewhere along the way, I reconnected with Russell – an old mate and fellow fishing fanatic. Over a few beers (as it should be), we started dreaming about a shop that actually gets anglers and stocks the gear we’d want to use ourselves.

Russell’s Side

When I’m not fishing or running the shop, I work with clients as a financial advisor – and I spend as much time as I can with my amazing wife, Lisa, and our energiser of a son, Bryce (who already thinks he can out-fish me… and honestly, he might be right).

Somehow, I ended up doing both the casting and the catching (a fact Garth is still coming to terms with). But, for me, fishing’s never really just been about the fish. It’s about time on the water, shared moments, patience, and the friendly competition that keeps us all coming back.

The Shop

After plenty of early mornings, late nights, and more than a few grey hairs, Cast and Catch was born. Based in the heart of Hillcrest, our shop is packed with top-quality gear, friendly advice, and a love for all things fishing — whether you’re into bass, trout, tiger, rock and surf, saltwater fly or offshore.

We’re proud of what we’ve built. And we’re just getting started.
